Client Engagement Specialist

HOURS: 30 hours per week, between the hours of 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (specific hours may vary)

ANNUAL SALARY: 18.00 - 21.00 per hour, county benefits, OPERS

The Ashtabula County Public Defender's Office is now accepting applications for the position of part-time Client Engagement Specialist. We are an office of 8 individuals, including attorneys and support staff. We handle every aspect of indigent defense from juvenile delinquency to murder. Our office is committed to seeking and sustaining a culturally diverse staff with expertise and interest in serving our indigent clientele who come to use with diverse needs, backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities to yield better results for our clients and our office.


The office is seeking a self-motivated individual to screen potential clients to determine qualifications for public defender services. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated dedication to indigent defense, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.


QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent. Criminal justice training or knowledge is strongly preferred. The ability to develop and maintain skills in time management and organization as well as work independently and dependently in a team environment. Regular travel between the office, courts, and jails is required. A well-qualified candidate will be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, have a strong attendance record and work ethic. A valid driver's license and/ or reliable transportation is required.


GENERAL DUTIES:
Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Interview individuals regarding eligibility for public defender services; interviews will be conducted in jail, courtroom, or office environment
  • Obtain financial information and on occasion note information about clients' medical, psychological, and social conditions
  • Secure copies of all court paperwork and obtain missing information from appropriate courts or agencies
  •  Provide all needed paperwork to the appropriate administrative staff to build case file
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of indigency guidelines and qualification requirements
  • Perform all other assignments as needed
