Amnesty Program Helps Ohio Residents Regain Driver's License

Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Initiative

BEGINNING JANUARY 31, 2019, THRU JULY 31, 2019, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles will implement a six-month driver’s license reinstatement fee debt reduction and waiver program for offenders whose driver’s licenses have been suspended for specific violations. The program only applies to a driver’s license or permit suspension; it does not apply to a commercial driver’s license or permit suspension.

Eligibility

Reduction of Fees
  1. Must have completed all court-ordered sanctions related to the eligible offense other than the payment of reinstatement fees.
  2. At least 18 months have expired since the end of the period of the suspension ordered by the court.
Waiver of Fees (with proof of case screen shot from Job and Family Services)
  1. Must have completed all court-ordered sanctions related to the eligible offense other than the payment of reinstatement fees.
  2. Must provide proof of indigence by providing a screen shot of your case status from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Benefits Self-Service Portal. The screen shot must include:
    • Current Status – Active
    • Current Month
    • Next Review Date
    • Any authorized representatives

How to Apply

The application period begins January 31, 2019. Applications must be received or postmarked by July 31, 2019, to be eligible for the reinstatement fee amnesty initiative.

Applicants may apply for a reinstatement fee debt reduction or waiver:

  1. Through BMV Online Services.
    • Applications for fee reduction only can be completed online. Applications for complete waiver (amnesty) of fees must be processed by mail.
  2. Application for fee reduction can be completed in person at a deputy registrar license agency. PLEASE NOTE: If applying for a waiver (amnesty) of fees, the application and supporting documents will need to be mailed to the Columbus office for review and processing.
  3. By mailing a completed Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Application (form BMV 2829) to:
