Contract Attorney - Athens County

Office of the Ohio Public Defender

The Office of the Ohio Public Defender is seeking an attorney to serve as independent
contractors to provide legal representation to indigent persons in Athens County, Ohio from
September 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

The contract includes a non‐negotiable payment amount of $926.00 per month for the 10‐
month period of the contract. The contract contains a case cap of 21 felony cases for the length
of the contract. The contract attorney will represent clients in felony filings and community
control violations in the common pleas court.

Interested individuals should submit a completed contract attorney application via email to
John R. Cornely, Deputy Director, Trial Services Division at john.cornely@opd.ohio.gov. A copy
of the application can be downloaded from www.opd.ohio.gov or requested from Mr. Cornely
via e‐mail. Applications will be considered as received, and will only be accepted until the
position is filled.

Interested individuals are advised, and by applying acknowledge, that this position is a separate
and independent enterprise from the State of Ohio and the Office of the Ohio Public Defender.
Selected independent contractors will retain sole and absolute discretion in the judgment of
the manner and means of carrying out the contractor's activities and responsibilities under the
contract. The contract is not to be construed as creating any joint employment relationship
between the contractor and the Office of the Ohio Public Defender or the State of Ohio.
